The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company brings visitors straight into a journey along the Washington Spy Trail (Rte. 25A). Founded in 1883, by several backers, including entrepreneur P.T. Barnum, the company is one of the oldest ferry companies in America. A ferry bearing Barnum’s name was launched in 1999. In addition to founding the circus everyone knows, Barnum was also an author, publisher, and philanthropist. He is widely credited with coining the adage “There’s a sucker born every minute.” Barnum also served two terms in the Connecticut legislature and he was elected in 1875 as Mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut.
With over 132 years of service, The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company is an institution within both the Long Island and Southern Connecticut communities. Passengers travel aboard the ferries, passing the time productivey (or just having fun) on their way to and from vacations, business events, family trips and more. Instead of bumper-to-bumper traffic, stress, and gas and toll costs, it is considered the most pleasurable way to travel across the sound.
*Covid-19 update: The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company is operating regular hours during the Covid-19 outbreak, but check ahead for seasonal schedules and to purchase tickets in advance. The company is requesting passengers practice social distancing and wear a face mask while aboard.
